Food-Store Chains, Supermarkets and Superstores in the Portland area.
National and international "Chain Stores" will have hundreds to thousands of stores. This list includes some local Food-Store groups with as few as 4 stores.

These stores sell fresh foods, packaged foods, and ready-to-eat cooked foods. They also sell beer, wine, home electronics, health and beauty products, shoes, clothing, hardware, and cleaning supplies. Many have a bank branch inside. Each maintains a slightly different mix of products. It is a healthy competition, that keeps quality and service high and prices are kept low. More-or-less.

Listed in order of significance to people in Portland (in our opinion).

      Shopping Malls
The American Shopping Mall has evolved from open-air to enclosed-and-air-conditioned, and back again. Many early malls have evolved into part-enclosed, part-open. Some malls struggle to draw enough shoppers to keep tennants, and regularly evolve. Successful malls attract nearby stores on land not owned by the same entitiy. The most successful malls (Washington Square, Clackamas, Bridgeport) grow satellite malls.
Malls compete with Superstores with overlapping products lines as well as unique, products, services and demographics.
A sub-trend is the Outlet Mall where department store brands have storefronts. The suggestion is that you can get bargains on last year's merchandise, or a greater variety or both. Merchandise includes clothing, shoes, and housewares. There are two of these about 30 minutes from Downtown Portland to the East and South. More are found at the Coast and along Interstate Highway 5 (I-5) in Washington.
It is difficult to define what should be listed here. We didn't list "Strip Malls" - generally a flat parking lot with an anchor tennant or two, plus a handful of smaller stores and restaurants. Usually everything is visible from at least one point in the parking lot. There are just too many. We do list some here if they have something unique or exceptional.
Many of the 130 Fred Meyer Superstores were built as anchors of strip malls (Beaverton Town Center) or have small store fronts inside the main store or opening onto the parking lot, or all three. Nice but not exceptional.
Where a mall has a parking structure, movie theater, relaxed restaurants, enclosed common space or some other interesting attribute, we'll list it here, sometimes just for the memory of what they once were.
Each is different and must be experienced on its own terms. You may think of it as an adventure, bringing out the urban Hunter / Gatherer in all of us.
Lloyd Center is a good example of mall evolution. It was Oregon's first modern shopping mall and at various times it was advertised as biggest in the country: When it first opened and later after an expansion. Today it's medium-large. Originally open-air, it was later enclosed and centrally-air-conditioned to keep up with changing markets. It is today the anchor of several other developments collectively called The Lloyd District, which includes hotels, motels, condiminiums, office towers, retirement homes, grocery stores, movie theaters, The Moda Center sports and entertainment venue, and the Oregon Convention Center. The enclosed mall is surrounded by open-air satellite stores including Dollar Tree and Safeway. The Ice Skating Rink has been there since the mall first opened.
