Capstone English Mastery Center is a small, private nonprofit school.
We offer students several advantages over other schools:
First, Capstone is extrordinarily flexible; we are completely Individualized.
This means that we have no terms -- no quarters, semesters, or sessions -- and
school is open 50 weeks per year. Students can enroll on any school day,
progress as quickly as they are able, and leave whenever they reach their goals.
We do not have a rigidly structured curriculum; we create a unique curriculum for
every student, based upon the abilities, interests, and goals of each.
When not in a tutorial meeting or study group, students study independently, and
arrange their study schedule according to what works best for themselves
Second, Capstone offers unparalleled attention from teachers. Every student is
assigned a supervising teacher, with whom they have several private meetings every week.
Whenever students have a question or a problem they are free to seek help from any teacher.
This might be a 15-second answer to a single question, or might turn into a 15-minute
mini-tutorial about grammar, vocabulary, or culture. The immediacy of this help is one
thing that separates Capstone from all other schools -- there is no waiting for an hour
or two (or a day or two until the next class to get an answer.
Teachers have much more opportunity to learn what interests students and how each learns
best, which enables teachers to help students better.
Third, Capstone keeps conversation and study groups as small as possible -- often
as few as 5 or 6 students per teacher, but never more than 10 students per teacher.
Every student not only has the opportunity to participate, but the expectation
that they will participate in every group session.
Fourth, Capstone tuition is the lowest of any school of which we know.
Most of our students are studying to pass the TOEFL or TOEIC (Capstone is
authorized to administer official TOEIC tests), but many
also wish to improve their English simply for business or personal reasons,
or to pass GED, GRE, or GMAT tests. For information about getting an I-20

Looking west at downtown Portland, home to the
largest urban park in the United States. Forest Park is located in
the hills in the upper right. Capstone EMC is located just 9 blocks
from the river from the end of the bridge on the right. The MAX light
rail trains, which serve communities as far east as Gresham and
as far west as Beaverton and Hillsboro go by beneath our windows and
stop just a half-block away. We are just 3 blocks from the bus mall,
where students can conveniently commute from Tigard, Tualatin, Lake
Oswego, Oregon City, or Milwaukie to the south or from Vancouver,
Washington to the north.
